This weekend, we took on a project that’s been on our list for a while: cleaning up the front walkway with some new edging and Riverstone.

Why We Chose This Project

Our front walkway was starting to look a little tired. The mulch had shifted, the edges were fading into the grass, and it just didn’t have that crisp, inviting look we wanted. Instead of going full-on landscaping overhaul, we opted for a quick, affordable solution: plastic garden edging paired with Riverstone to hold everything neatly in place.

Materials We Used:

Black plastic garden edging (easy to install and budget-friendly) Metal edging stakes Riverstone (we chose a natural mix for that clean but organic look) Landscaping fabric (optional but helpful for weed control) Shovel, mallet, and wheelbarrow Enthusiastic kids

The Process (and the Fun):

Clearing the Edge – First, we dug a shallow trench along both sides of the walkway, just deep enough for the plastic edging to sit securely. This was a perfect task for the kids to help with—they love getting their hands in the dirt. Setting the Edging – We laid out the plastic edging and used metal stakes to pin it firmly into the soil. This step gave instant shape to the walkway and set the foundation for the rest of the project. Laying Landscaping Fabric – To help prevent weeds, we rolled out some landscaping fabric before adding stone. Optional, but a great step if you want low-maintenance results. Adding Riverstone – The most fun (and most kid-friendly) part: hauling and spreading Riverstone. Our little ones loved moving the rocks, scooping with small shovels, and arranging them along the edge. It turned into both a learning moment and a playtime session.

Why We Love It

This project didn’t take long—maybe a few hours in total—but the results are dramatic. The Riverstone provides a beautiful, clean contrast to the walkway, and the edging keeps everything contained and polished. Plus, getting the kids involved made it a family memory we’ll all remember.

Final Thoughts

Projects like this remind us that home improvement doesn’t have to be massive to be meaningful. A few materials, some elbow grease, and the willingness to let the kids join in can go a long way in making your space both functional and beautiful.

Whether you’re homesteading, gardening, or just chipping away at the to-do list, we highly recommend this simple walkway refresh.

Want to try this project yourself?

We’ll be sharing a reel soon with before-and-after clips, materials, and tips—stay tuned over on [Instagram/TikTok/YouTube] @WildHeartLegacy.

#DIYLandscaping #WeekendProject #RiverstoneEdging #FamilyDIY #OutdoorProjects #HomesteadLife #WildHeartBuilds

https://x.com/wildheartlegacy/status/1919236258930294830?s=46&t=D6R9RTQp7TokpySxwJrv_A

There’s something deeply satisfying about tackling an outdoor project that transforms your space—especially when it’s done with little hands helping along the way.
